Constraints on Cool Gas in Rich Clusters of Galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cool gas should be present in galaxy clusters due to stripping of galactic gas, infall onto the cluster, and from cooling flows. We searched for this gas through resonance absorption line observations from lowionization metal line gas toward six background quasars. Both cooling flow and non-cooling flow clusters were observed, with lines of sight from the inner to outer parts of the cluster (0.2 ≤ rproj/Rcluster ≤ 0.7). The HST/FOS spectra failed to detect Fe II or Mg II absorption at the cluster redshift, with 1-σ upper limits on the ion column densities of N ≤ 10–10 cm. The failure to detect absorption lines implies that the cool cluster gas either is more highly ionized or it has a low covering factor.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملThe Role of a Hot Gas Environment on the Evolution of Galaxies
Most spiral galaxies are found in galaxy groups with low velocity dispersions; most E/S0 galaxies are found in galaxy groups with relatively high velocity dispersions. The mass of the hot gas we can observe in the E/S0 groups via their thermal X-ray emission is, on average, as much as the baryonic mass of the galaxies in these groups. By comparison, galaxy clusters have as much or more hot gas ...
متن کاملLenticular Galaxies and Their Environments
It is widely believed that lenticular (S0) galaxies were initially spirals from which the gas has been removed by interactions with hot cluster gas, or by rampressure stripping of cool gas from spirals that are orbiting within rich clusters of galaxies. However, problems with this interpretation are that: (1) Some lenticulars, such as NGC 3115, are isolated field galaxies rather than cluster me...
متن کاملDwarf Galaxies and the Origin of Intracluster Medium
Following the recent suggestion that it is dwarf galaxies in clusters – as opposed to large ellipticals – that provide the intracluster gas, we estimate the metallicity of the intracluster medium (ICM) in such a case. We derive analytical expressions for the fraction of mass of dwarf galaxies that is ejected, and estimate the metallicity of the resulting intracluster gas. We find that the metal...
متن کاملThe Orbital Structure of Dark Matter Halos with Gas
With the success of the Chandra and XMM missions and the maturation of gravitational lensing techniques, powerful constraints on the orbital structure of cluster dark matter halos are possible. I show that the X-ray emissivity and mass of a galaxy cluster uniquely specify the anisotropy and velocity dispersion profiles of its dark matter halo. I consider hydrostatic as well as cooling flow scen...
